On Friday evening, the 11th of April 2025, the Western Cape Commandery gathered for a memorable Soup Evening held on the eve of International St Lazarus Day. Organised by the ever-capable Caroline Isted and graciously hosted by Billy Downer and William de Villiers at their home, the evening was a delightful blend of fellowship, philanthropy, and a touch of medieval charm.

While the evening provided a welcome opportunity for Commandery members to reconnect in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere, its purpose extended beyond socialising. The gathering served as a collection point for pre-loved items destined for the St Lazarus stall at the upcoming Christine Revell Children’s Home Annual Bazaar. In an inspiring show of generosity, the evening saw a remarkable total of 84 kilograms of clothing and household goods donated.

In true chivalric spirit, a bit of healthy competition added to the fun. The coveted “medal for the heaviest contribution” went to none other than our Grand Bailiff, Dame Tamra Capstick-Dale, who brought in an impressive 32 kilograms of items. Her commitment to service is as unwavering as ever, and she accepted the recognition with her trademark warmth and humility.

Dinner, served with equal generosity, featured a hearty ham and pea soup, lovingly prepared by our hosts. The comfort of the warm meal was matched only by the warmth of the company. For dessert, Oleen Louw delighted everyone with her famous delectable brownies, which quickly disappeared between sips of tea and laughter.

The evening was also rich in stories, with William de Villiers enchanting guests with tales of Knights of Old, weaving history and humour in a way only he can. His anecdotes reminded us all of the traditions we uphold and the enduring legacy of service and fraternity that binds us together.

As the night drew to a close, there was a strong sense that this gathering had been more than just a pleasant evening—it was a reaffirmation of the values we hold dear. Fellowship, service, and storytelling came together in perfect harmony, marking the eve of St Lazarus Day in true Commandery style.

Here’s to many more evenings filled with purpose, camaraderie, and a shared commitment to doing good.
