Cape Commandery “Winter Warmer” function. The event was held on 11 July in the Community Hall of the Pinewood Retirement Village in Pinelands. Present were: Wendy Hartshorne(Commander) and members Michael Allen, Mac Bisset, Will M Carter, William De Villiers, Billy Downer, Alan Lindhorst, Robert Mitchell, Derrick Rosslind, together with six friends and the speaker, Jo Maxwell.
The winter cold was held at bay by a cash bar (sponsored by Commander Mac Bisset), and the most delicious supper of soup and bread rolls, provided by members of the Commandery. Jo Maxwell is the ‘Queen’ of the Cape Town Red Hat Renegades, a member of the Claremont Rotary Club, and an indefatigable social activist working to alleviate the plight of Cape Town’s most deprived communities, with a special emphasis on the sick and elderly. Members of the Order contributed blankets and non-perishable foodstuffs, and the Commander presented Jo Maxwell with a cheque for R5000 to help her with her charitable activities.
All in all, it was a most pleasant get-together for the members, and an extremely worthwhile opportunity to hear about – and support – some great charitable initiatives. Well done to Wendy, Derrick Rosslind and all the friends and members who made the evening come alive!
